Online Store 2.0: what changed for Shopify merchants

Online Store 2.0 moved page layout out of code and into the theme editor. Here is what that means in practice.

Online Store 2.0 is the architecture behind modern Shopify themes. Its biggest change is simple: every page can be built from sections, not just the home page.

      Sections on every page

Older themes limited sections to the home page. With Online Store 2.0, product, collection, blog and custom pages use JSON templates. Your team can add, remove and reorder sections on any of them in the theme editor, without a developer.

      Metafields without code

Metafields and metaobjects let you store structured content, such as team members or FAQs, and show it in a section. Editors fill in fields; the theme decides how they look.

      Why it matters

      • Pages stay consistent because sections are reused.
      • Editors change content safely, inside the layout the design allows.
      • Developers spend less time on content requests.

If your theme was built before 2021, check whether it uses JSON templates. If not, an upgrade is worth planning.
